Hitam-Putih Art Community

Hitan-Putih (Black-White) Art Community is based in Padangpanjang, West Sumatera. It is an art community that focuses on creating theatrical works and films. First established at National Syafe'i Institute (INS) Kayutanam in 1993 under the name of Teater Plus INS Kayutanam, it was led by Yusril, who emerged as a great actor in Indonesian theatre world. They performed their works, such as Perguruan, Ring, Interne, Menunggu and Hamba-Hamba all over Indonesia.

Teater Plus then evolved into HITAM-PUTIH Art Community on October 31, 1997 and became independent. Their main motto is: “A desire to be bold, not to whiten the black and blacken the white.” Since then, the group has collaborated in many events in various cities in Indonesia.

“Tangga”

(Stairs) was first produced in 2006. It was performed at Gedung Hoerijah Adam ISI Padangpanjang, at Teater Utama Taman Budaya Sumatera Barat in 2007, at Teater Halaman Taman Ismail Marzuki and at Gedung Pertunjukan Sunan Ambu STSI Bandung in 2013. The performance involves acrobatic movements, taking its base from Minangkabau pencak silat movements, with sharp correlation between the dialogues and body movements of the performers. Using eight straight stairs as the main properties and vertical and horizontal mise en scene, sharp dialogues, and body movements, the performance tries to express the dualism of power in Minangkabau. Certain small elements are added to underline the influence of Minangkabau culture. It is a performance that tries to find meaning beyond reality using local nuances.
