Synopsis

The customs and traditions of the local people of Penginyongan, a sub regency of Cilacap, Central Java, have been handed down for generations. The locals share the belief that if they stray from their customs they will be punished. One custom, “Kaulan”, is a promise to the gods to celebrate a ceremony in their honor if doom passes by.
In the story there is a family with a sick child who change the child’s name in order to make him unknown to the evil spirits and promises to honor the gods by a series of ceremonies if he recovers. One of those ceremonies is supported by ritual music “Calung Kaulan”.
